Tips to Select YOUR Perfect Wedding Photographer

Today's brides have so many wedding photographers to choose from, spanning vast price ranges. So how do you determine which photographer is best for you?

Here are some tips to help you
narrow the field!

  1. Meet with as many photographers as possible and make notes about how comfortable you were (or weren't) with each. Remember, your photographer will be with you and your family during your ENTIRE wedding and reception. If you don't click with their personality and style, it is bound to show through in your photographs.

  2. When you meet with each photographer, be sure to look at their portfolio. Ask to see pictures from a complete wedding. Many portfolios feature only the best of the best. When you can see a full wedding it gives you a good feel for the type of photographs you'll get with yours.

  3. Make sure the photographer matches your style. Do you prefer more candid shots? Black and whites? Colorizes? Stylized? Ask the photographer about his/her preferred style and look at samples. Ask if is additional costs associated black and whites, colorization, or touch ups.

  4. Get price lists and be sure to verify the price list is the one that will apply to YOUR wedding! It's good to book as early as possible, but if you are 6 to 12 months out from your wedding, the photographer may raise his/her rates between the time you book and the day of your wedding.

  5. Before signing the contract, be sure that ALL costs are detailed in writing. Don't sign a contract with an open ended price. Make sure that prices for reprints are included, as well as every aspect of the agreement. This protects you and your photographer.

In addition to prices and the package selection, your contract should include things like: wedding date, arrival time, length of shooting time, fees and overtime charges, plus a list of all locations where photos will be taken and when.

Other considerations:

  • Ask your photographer if he/she works with an assistant. Many work alone, but if you are having a large wedding with blended families, you may want to hire a photographer who utilizes an assistant to help keep track of it all.
  • Ask for recommendations from friends and co-workers.
  • Ask to references or testimonials from other brides.
  • Be sure the photographer has experience shooting weddings.
  • Make a list of all *must have* and *nice to have* photographs from your wedding. Be sure you get input from your parents and from your fiancée's parents too! Then, give this list to your photographer. If your photographer has photographed weddings at your venue before, don't be shy about asking for his/her input on interesting and unique shots.
